Words of Welcome 2023-2024
Warm greetings to all our members,
As a school nurse and the current president of the BCSNA, I knew it would be important to send some encouragement as we embark on this school year It sounds almost like "sci-fi "to say aloud school year 2023-2024 but that is in fact where we are. We have seen and experienced so much over the years, most especially in the last few. The world is changing rapidly and anyone in education knows we all share the need to adapt in order to be successful in our roles and the work we do.
I must admit that my first thought when I woke up before the sun came up today was " I only have about 108 days until Christmas break". I tell you this, one so you get a chuckle, and two, so you know that I validate you and how hard you all work each school year keeping students, staff and communities safe and healthy. I have noticed that those days off come just in the "nick" of time.
As you step out this week welcoming your students I have only a few things to share. I hope you find some food for thought and most especially some encouragement.
First, practice the intentional pauses that our dear colleague Robin Cogan shared in her recent blog posts. Here are the links in case you missed them. Her points are so well taken that I won't attempt to repeat them but please do read them. The takeaway Robin shared is " Taking intentional pauses as a school nurse is essential for your well-being and the quality of care you provide." Sage advice.
Second, challenge your assumptions. It's so easy when we've been doing things for so long in the same way, we get stuck in our own ways of doing things and lose the ability to see things in a different way. Here is a link to some great points on that. https://morriganpost.com/ways-to-challenge-assumptions/.
For myself, I think about how I might apply that to welcoming students who are new to our schools, our state and our great nation.
